Starlight Express Silver Jubilee

The Venue? The Gecko Café, comfortably ensconced in an alcove in the inner square of a suburban shopping centre.

I arrived just in time for the dimming of the main lights and the magical switch on of the fairy lights, accompanied by sighs of delight by all attendees. Walls were bathed in honey light as masks and images of Africa emerged against a background of subtle shadows, intriguing in their reflection of the richness of our habitat.

And so the show commenced. With Master of Ceremonies Cleone McMillan (DTM), we were led through a rich and wondrous Toastmaster journey, beginning back in 1979 and culminating twenty-five years later at this Silver Jubilee celebration.

The roots of Good Hope Club lie in the naval history of South Africa, and the Club journeyed through some of the colonial history of our country, the years of apartheid, and into the post-apartheid era. In all this time, Good Hope Club has actively participated in the community and offered an opportunity for growth, sharing and good will.

Throughout a sumptuous supper, guest speakers shared their experiences of the club along the twenty-five year journey. As members of the audience we were treated to memories, vignettes, tips and accolades through the years by the past members and guest speakers including Admiral Norman Wise (Rtd) a founder member (who spoke about the naval traditions within the club); Peter Lawson (the first President of the Club); his wife Gill Lawson (who was the first woman to be elected as a Toastmasters President in a South African Club); Rick Prowse (one of the first civilians to join the club); and finally Admiral Eric Green (Rtd) (who summed up and brought us full circle).

The history and hallmark of Toastmasters, and the gift of Toastmasters in each and every life, shone in the speeches and in the eyes of the speakers.

Then on to another highlight - and the perpetuation of the wisdom and wonder of the evening - an accolade by Nadine Butler (ATM-S) to Cleone McMillan for her role as a guiding star in the Good Hope Club journey. Having shared a glimpse of the stars in the eyes of others, at the end of the evening, I collected my gift of a perfect red rose, and floated on air to my car.

To spend such a glorious evening sharing the company of fellow toastmaster travelers, brought home so clearly the fact that Toastmasters is a lifetime journey and, for some of us and particularly those who extend ourselves, truly the journey of a lifetime.

With thanks to the Musical Maestro, Andrews Lloyd Webbber
